Dandan Luo - Artist Statement

After graduation from the Corcoran School of Art + Design in Washington, D.C., I continue to make art. My work is an externalization of my own experience, dreams, and imagination.

I often use culturally accessible symbols. Putting them in disorienting contexts, I invite viewers to consider their less saccharin associations. This allows viewers the freedom to decipher these symbols and interpret them as they may.

If life is imperfect, are we still allowed to dream? Following the paths created in my works, viewers can take personal journeys of imagination, wandering through the imageries which intersect on the same plane of visual representation, but also diverge. Viewers might get a laugh and feel the positivity as they discover bits and pieces, twists and turns of my paintings and other works, just like how we navigate our experience of the world where we never have complete understanding.
